Why location changes take-home pay

Federal taxes apply nationwide

Federal income tax withholding, Social Security and Medicare apply to employees in every state under the same 2026 federal rules.

State income-tax systems vary

States use different rate schedules, deductions and withholding methods, and some states impose no individual income tax at all. The same gross salary can produce different take-home pay depending on the state.

Some cities add their own tax

Certain local jurisdictions levy additional income taxes. New York City is one example: NYC residents pay a city income tax on top of New York State tax.

Your details matter too

Filing status, W-4 elections, pre-tax benefits, retirement contributions and other deductions all change what is actually withheld from each paycheck.

Every result is an estimate for education and planning. It is not tax, legal or financial advice, and your employer's payroll system determines what is actually withheld.

How to use the calculators

  1. Choose a state

Open the calculator for the state where you work. If you live in New York City, the New York calculator also applies the city resident tax.

  2. Enter pay and withholding details

Add your salary or hourly rate, pay frequency, filing status, W-4 details, and any overtime, tips, bonuses or deductions.

  3. Review the estimate

See estimated federal, state and local taxes, deductions and take-home pay per period, weekly, biweekly, monthly and annual.
