North Dakota Form North Dakota modern W-4

Copy the actual modern W-4 box; federal calculator selections do not confirm a certificate. Only a confirmed new hire with no W-4 uses Single by default; leave extra zero in that narrow mode. Separate ND extra is not federal 4(c). Actual wage-bracket periods and upper limits apply; no percentage fallback. Legacy/exempt, local/interstate and special-worker eligibility require separate assessment. Only confirmed qualifying wage exclusions. Bonus, overtime and taxable tips are averaged, not separate-check withholding or a lawful-overtime decision. Employer UI/WC are not employee deductions. View Form North Dakota modern W-4

Copy an actual separate ND request in cents once; do not copy federal Step 4(c). Leave zero for this estimate's no-W4 new-hire mode. Technical estimate limit $10,000, not a legal maximum.
Blocks the final estimate report; this tool does not decide federal/state exemption, reciprocity or special-worker eligibility.

How North Dakota withholding is calculated

Copy the actual modern W-4

Use the actual Step 1(c) box: Single or married filing separately, Joint or qualifying surviving spouse, or Head of household. A confirmed new hire with no W-4 uses Single; this narrow no-form estimate requires zero extra. A separate requested ND extra is added once, independently of federal Step 4(c). Unconfirmed, pre-2020 and exempt certificates block the final report. This tool does not prepare or approve your certificate.

Actual period tables and wage limits

Taxable wages per period must be below $5,475 weekly, $6,475 biweekly, $6,675 semimonthly, $13,250 monthly or $534 daily. Lower endpoints are included; upper endpoints are excluded. Quarterly and semiannual periods are unsupported. The official percentage-method example has inconsistent annual arithmetic; this calculator uses only the separately published wage-bracket method and does not repair that formula by guessing.

Fictional ordinary-pay example

An actual modern W-4 Single selection and $1,800 weekly taxable wages use the printed $1,800–$1,825 band: $14 of ND withholding. Head of household uses $6 in the same band. A separately requested $7.50 ND extra increases $14 to $21.50 once. This is withholding, not final-return liability, and another employer's method may differ.

Employee costs and wage-law scope

North Dakota prohibits shifting employer unemployment contributions or WSI workers compensation premiums to employee wages. They are not deducted here. Overtime, tips, minimum wage and authorized deductions depend on actual coverage and facts; an entered multiplier does not establish legal entitlement or regular rate. Reciprocity for qualifying Minnesota/Montana residents, tribal, agricultural, military, carrier and mobile-worker exceptions require separate assessment.

Estimate scope

2026 modern W-4 wage-bracket estimate: copies the actual Step 1(c) box; a confirmed new hire with no W-4 uses Single. Separate requested ND extra is added once, not copied from federal Step 4(c). Federal Steps 2–4 do not adjust this state table. Printed period wage limits apply; no annualized or percentage-method fallback. Quarterly/semiannual, legacy forms and exemptions are unsupported. Only already-confirmed qualifying taxable wages and benefit exclusions. Bonus, entered overtime and taxable tips are averaged, not separate-check withholding. Employer UI/WC are not employee charges. No reciprocity, special-worker eligibility, local/interstate allocation, actual YTD or complete wage-law determination. Wage limits USD: weekly <5475; biweekly <6475; semimonthly <6675; monthly <13250; daily <534.

North Dakota paycheck questions

What the North Dakota estimate includes, which official schedules it uses, and what it deliberately leaves out.

Does the tool use my federal extra withholding for North Dakota?

No. The published state table uses the actual modern Step 1(c) selection and taxable period wages. Enter only a separate confirmed ND extra request in the state field; it is added once.

What happens above the printed wage limit?

The final report is blocked. We do not extend the last band, scale an annual table or silently switch to the percentage method.

Can I estimate a reciprocal-state exemption or a separate bonus check?

Those cases are outside this ordinary estimate. Annual bonus, entered overtime and taxable tips are averaged over the modeled periods; they do not reproduce exact separate supplemental checks or decide exemption eligibility.
