What-if scenarios
Calculations are estimates for informational purposes and are not tax, legal, or financial advice. Actual withholding and take-home pay may differ.
How Colorado withholding is calculated
Follow the employer worksheet
DR1098 annualizes taxable wages for the current pay period, subtracts the annual withholding deduction, applies 4.40% and divides by pay periods. Its default is $11,000 for federal married filing jointly or qualifying surviving spouse and $5,500 otherwise. The calculator's federal joint selection also represents the qualifying-surviving-spouse federal schedule. This estimates withholding, not final return liability.
A zero DR0004 amount is not blank
Select the completed DR0004 line2 option only to copy an annual amount actually on that certificate. An explicit zero means no deduction; a blank line uses the filing-status default. Line3 adds a separate state amount each paycheck. Federal credits, other income, deductions and extra withholding do not silently replace those state entries.
A reproducible example
With $52,000 annual salary, biweekly pay and no benefits, the regular gross paycheck is $2,000. Single default Colorado withholding is ($52,000 − $5,500) × 4.40% ÷ 26 = $78.69. Standard employee FAMLI is $8.80. Federal tax and FICA reduce take-home separately. This is our worksheet calculation, not an official net-pay example.
FAMLI is separate from income tax
The enacted 2026 total premium is 0.88%; employers may collect at most half from employees. This estimate includes the 0.44% state-plan employee maximum on gross wages, including modeled tips and bonus, up to the $184,500 Social Security base. Retirement and health deductions do not reduce the premium base. Employer-only premiums are not employee deductions. Actual YTD stopping, partial-year work and multiple-employer reconciliations are not modeled.
Use your actual coverage arrangement
Confirmed excluded coverage, employer funding and approved private plans can change the employee deduction. Exclude the standard estimate if it does not apply; enter a different actual deduction once under other post-tax deductions. The calculator does not decide eligibility or treat a private policy alone as proof of exemption.
Local and special arrangements
Municipal occupational privilege taxes (OPT) are not calculated automatically. Include an applicable actual employee municipal deduction under other post-tax deductions. Colorado exempt certificates, special nonresident wage allocations, credits and year-end adjustments are outside this standard estimate. A separate annual bonus is combined with one representative regular paycheck for withholding and its one-time tax is averaged over the year; actual payment timing can differ.

Colorado paycheck questions
What the Colorado estimate includes, which official schedules it uses, and what it deliberately leaves out.
Does a zero DR0004 line2 use the default?
No. The official worksheet requires an explicit zero to be honored. A blank line or no DR0004 uses the federal-filing-status deduction.
Does changing federal filing status change Colorado withholding?
It changes the default annual deduction if you have not chosen an explicit DR0004 line2 amount. Federal W-4 steps3 and4 do not replace your Colorado certificate amounts.
Does FAMLI stop after retirement deductions?
The standard employee premium uses gross wages rather than income-taxable wages and is capped annually. This calculator shows an annual average, not the actual paycheck when your employer reaches the cap.
