Missouri Form MO W-4

Choose your actual MO W-4 status independently of the federal W-4. The default is single, as when no state certificate is filed; married does not automatically mean one income. Standard formula only: the reduced fixed withholding amount on line 3 is not modeled. Extra withholding on line 2 and a valid line 4 exemption are supported. Separate annual bonus uses the aggregate method, averaged in the results; no 4.7% flat-option payroll history is assumed. View Form MO W-4

Whole dollars requested on your MO W-4 line 2, added once after the regular formula.
Select only a qualifying exemption actually claimed on your MO W-4. Removes state and additional state withholding; city earnings tax remains independently determined.

Withheld using Missouri annual withholding formula

Kansas City / St. Louis earnings tax

Choose the applicable city residence or nonresident work arrangement. Both modeled cities use 1% of eligible taxable compensation, excluding qualified retirement and cafeteria benefits. Residents include all eligible earnings; nonresidents enter the compensation share earned in the city. Employer withholding may differ from that allocation; this estimate does not apply for or obtain a refund. St. Louis County is not the City of St. Louis. Cross-city credits, actual day-count refunds and employer payroll-expense tax are outside this estimate. Official Kansas City earnings-tax FAQ (St. Louis sources below)

What-if scenarios

Calculations are estimates for informational purposes and are not tax, legal, or financial advice. Actual withholding and take-home pay may differ.

How Missouri withholding is calculated

Use the state certificate, not an assumed spouse status

Missouri uses three MO W-4 choices. Single, married filing separately and married with a working spouse use $16,100. Married with a nonworking spouse uses $32,200; head of household uses $24,150. The starting selection is single, as without a state certificate. Federal filing status and W-4 other-income adjustments do not silently choose the Missouri certificate.

Official monthly example

Missouri DOR's example has $35,000 annual taxable wages and a married employee whose spouse works. After the $16,100 standard deduction, taxable income is $18,900. The published annual schedule gives $707.81 before payroll-period rounding; dividing by 12 and rounding yields $59 monthly Missouri withholding. Benefit deductions and an extra amount change your own example.

A separate bonus uses the aggregate method

The annual bonus field is treated as a separate payment: add it to one representative regular paycheck, calculate combined withholding and subtract that paycheck's regular withholding. The results average that one bonus tax over annual pay periods. This permitted method also handles the situation where no Missouri tax has been withheld on regular pay, without presuming eligibility for the optional 4.7% flat method. Overtime in regular pay remains part of regular wages.

City earnings are a separate calculation

Kansas City and St. Louis each tax eligible employee earnings at 1%. Residents include eligible earnings regardless of employer location; nonresidents use the share earned in the city. Qualified deferred compensation and cafeteria-plan benefits are excluded from the modeled city base. No Missouri standard deduction or dependent allowance reduces the city base. Select your actual arrangement; cross-city credits, refund claims and special compensation types are not determined here.

What this estimate does not decide

The calculator does not apply the reduced fixed MO W-4 line 3 amount, special nonresident allocation certificates, cross-state or cross-city credits, or eligibility for an exemption. The standard formula, an elected line 2 extra amount and a valid line 4 exemption are supported. Employer unemployment and St. Louis payroll-expense tax are not employee deductions. The city percentage entry is your documented compensation allocation, not an automatic remote-work refund.

Missouri paycheck questions

What the Missouri estimate includes, which official schedules it uses, and what it deliberately leaves out.

Does Missouri have a flat income-tax rate?

The 2026 withholding schedule is graduated, with a top rate of 4.7% after the state standard deduction. That does not mean 4.7% of every dollar of gross pay is withheld.

Is St. Louis County taxed like St. Louis City?

The city employee earnings tax applies to City of St. Louis residents and qualifying work in the city. A St. Louis County address alone does not establish city residence or city work. Choose the arrangement that actually applies.

Can I enter a reduced amount from MO W-4 line 3?

This version models the standard formula, extra line 2 withholding and a valid line 4 exemption. It does not apply the fixed reduced line 3 instruction; that case needs your employer's actual withholding treatment.
