Hawaii paycheck example
A $52,000 salary over 26 biweekly payments is $2,000 gross per check. This example uses single federal filing status, no W-4 adjustments, and no bonus, tips or voluntary deductions; zero state allowances and the Part1 Single schedule are used; TDI and PHC amounts are not included; no certificate eligibility is inferred. Every amount below comes from the calculator's shared 2026 engine.

How Hawaii withholding is calculated
Part1 formula, not final-return tax
The current BookletA Rev2025 applies from January1,2026. This calculator chooses its Part1 annualized formula: subtract1144 per completed HW-4 allowance and the4350 lump withholding allowance, then use the actual printed annual base and marginal rate. Preserve those bases rather than replacing them with a continuous progressive tax calculation or final-return standard deductions. The official500weekly/Single/three allowance example gives9.58. The other permitted Part2 method gives9.56 for that example; this calculator does not blend the two methods.
Your actual HW-4 election
Copy Single, Married or Married at the higher Single rate from block3 independently of federal W-4. Head of household uses Single; its worksheet allowance is already in the completed whole block4 total. Block5 additional withholding is agreed in writing and added once after ordinary tax. Single0 is the statutory no-HW4 fallback. The99input bound is an interface limit, not a legal allowance cap. Certified disability and nonresident military-spouse elections, eligibility and HW6/HW7 allocation are excluded; there is no generic federal-exempt shortcut.
Monthly-first long periods and daily scope
Under section15(d), quarterly, semiannual and annual payroll are computed on the average month then multiplied by the months. We cent-round Part1 monthly withholding before multiplying3,6or12, then add any actual-pay-period extra once. Daily state annualization uses365 while the interface models260 payments for federal/work-pattern planning; it does not infer actual calendar days or reconstruct miscellaneous payroll. The optional under-ten-cent withholding waiver is not exercised. Annual bonus, entered overtime and reported taxable tips are averaged with regular wages; separate supplemental checks and actual YTD are excluded.
TDI and prepaid health are actual cost sharing
TDI is not automatically a fixed0.5%employee tax. An employer can pay all; an eligible employee share is limited by half the actual premium,0.5%eligible weekly wages and the2026maximum7.50perweek. The weekly wage base is1500.21; do not infer a universal390annualcap or apply it to ineligible work. No TDI assessment is automatic here: enter only an already-confirmed actual post-tax employee TDI amount once in Other post-tax, if applicable. We do not decide premium tax treatment or statutory contribution wage exclusions. PHC also depends on actual eligible coverage and premium: employee share at most half premium and1.5%wages. Enter health premium only once in its already-confirmed pre-tax or post-tax category. No duplicate automatic PHC charge; zero entered is an assumption, not proof of no obligation.
Estimate scope

Daily state annualization365 versus260 modeled payments. Bonus, overtime and reported taxable tips averaged; only confirmed qualifying pre-tax benefits. TDI/PHC not assessed automatically: enter confirmed actual post-tax TDI once in Other post-tax, health premium once in its confirmed tax category. No eligibility, premium cost, local/interstate allocation, special certificates, separate checks, actual YTD or wage-law compliance determination; no employer UI/WC deduction.
Employer obligations and wage rules
Employees do not finance Hawaii unemployment insurance; employer workers compensation premiums cannot be deducted from wages. Ordinary employee wages are not county GET sales receipts, so we do not deduct GET surcharge from employee pay. Special local/interstate, contractor or loan-out obligations are excluded. The general2026minimum wage is16perhour, with exceptions; generally overtime follows40hours, while public works have distinct daily/weekend/holiday rules. This tool does not determine legal regular rate, tip credits, eligibility or full compliance.
