Indiana Form WH-4

Current rates effective October 1, 2026. Copy your WH-4 exemption counts, not federal W-4 credits. Select the applicable January 1 county: Indiana residence, or principal Indiana work county if you lived outside Indiana. Unknown county prevents report export. The calculator does not determine exemption eligibility or short-term nonresident relief. View Form WH-4

Total already claimed on line 5, including qualifying age/blindness exemptions; $1,000 annually each.
$1,500 annually per qualifying dependent claimed.
Separate qualifying first-time exemption; $1,500 annually each.
Separate qualifying adopted-child exemption; $3,000 annually each.
Only for a qualifying documented election. Sets Indiana state and extra state withholding to zero; applicable county withholding remains. This is not federal withholding exemption or the 30-day nonresident waiver.

How Indiana withholding is calculated

Choose your January 1 county

If you lived in Indiana on January 1, use that county of residence. If you lived outside Indiana but had your principal Indiana employment on January 1, use that work county. A later move does not automatically change this selection. Confirm no county tax only when it does not apply; an unknown county leaves an incomplete estimate and disables the report.

Four WH-4 exemption groups

Line 5 personal exemptions remove $1,000 annually each. Line 6 qualifying dependents and line 7 qualifying first-time dependents each remove $1,500 annually. Line 8 qualifying adopted dependents remove another $3,000 annually each. Copy the counts already established on your WH-4; the calculator does not decide eligibility. Each group is rounded separately for the pay period.

Official $800 weekly example

DN1's example uses five personal, three additional dependent, one first-time dependent and two adopted-child exemptions. The deductions total $326.92, leaving $473.08 taxable. Indiana state withholding is $13.96 and a 1% county adds $4.73. Select Harrison, Newton, Kosciusko or Warrick for a 1% county in this table.

Reciprocity does not erase county withholding

A valid reciprocal-state withholding certificate can remove Indiana state withholding while the applicable county tax remains. Use the documented reciprocal election only when it applies. The federal no-withholding rule does not automatically exempt Indiana, and this tool does not determine the separate short-term nonresident waiver.

Current annual average and separate bonuses

The estimate averages current rates across your selected frequency; it does not reconstruct withholding before October 1. The annual bonus field represents a separate non-periodic payment, without exemption deductions. Percentage retirement contributions apply to bonus wages; regular per-period benefits stay allocated to regular wages. Daily Indiana exemptions follow the official 365-day column while annual federal payroll uses 260 workdays; quarterly and semiannual exemptions divide the official annual amount by the chosen periods.

Indiana paycheck questions

What the Indiana estimate includes, which official schedules it uses, and what it deliberately leaves out.

What is Indiana's 2026 withholding rate?

State withholding uses 2.95% after the WH-4 exemptions for regular pay. County tax is additional and uses the applicable January 1 county. The calculator uses the county table effective October 1, 2026.

Why must I select a county?

Indiana county tax can materially change net pay. The calculator does not guess a county or silently treat an unknown location as zero. Select the applicable county or explicitly confirm no county tax to enable the report.

Do exemptions reduce a separate bonus?

No. DN1 says the exemption deduction tables apply to regular periodic pay; a one-time or non-periodic bonus is withheld without those exemptions.
