How Kentucky withholding is calculated
2026 state formula and your K-4
The optional computer method annualizes taxable wages, subtracts $3,360, applies 3.5% and divides by pay periods. Unlike federal filing status, Kentucky has no allowance count or filing-status rate variation. Enter an additional state amount only once. A valid K-4 exemption can suppress state withholding; this tool does not decide eligibility or complete the certificate.
Louisville, Lexington and other local occupational taxes
City, county and school-district occupational taxes can change take-home pay. They are not computed here, and a missing local tax line does not mean none is due. Consult the relevant local revenue office. To include an actual applicable local amount from your payroll, enter it once as another post-tax deduction; this does not calculate rates, caps, overlapping districts, residency or refunds.
Cross-border work and exemption eligibility
The K-4 lists conditional no-liability, reciprocal-state, military-spouse and Fort Campbell exemptions. Do not infer eligibility from an address alone. Selecting an already valid exemption zeros only this state withholding estimate; home-state tax, local occupational fees and interstate allocations are not resolved.
Benefits, taxable tips and bonuses
The March 2026 guide follows Section 3401 wage definitions with eligible retirement, cafeteria and health-plan exclusions. Copy actual qualifying deductions; Roth or otherwise taxable benefits are not pre-tax elections. Enter taxable reported tips only: the calculator cannot test the monthly cash-tip threshold. Annual bonus is averaged with taxable wages, not reconstructed as a separate paycheck. Multiple employers can duplicate the standard deduction; coordination is not automatic.
Overtime and wage rules are a separate check
Kentucky publishes weekly overtime and separate seventh-day rules with exceptions. Enter only the overtime hours and multiplier that apply to your payroll. Weekly totals do not determine days worked, coverage, exemptions, legal regular rate, tip credits, minimum wage or lawful deductions. A salary does not automatically establish overtime exemption.
Employer taxes are separate
Employer unemployment tax is not subtracted from employee pay here. Kentucky ELC cites KRS 342.420 prohibiting deductions of workers' compensation insurance premiums from employee wages. Actual allowed benefit deductions remain separate. This is an employee planning estimate, not an employer tax or compliance service.

Kentucky paycheck questions
What the Kentucky estimate includes, which official schedules it uses, and what it deliberately leaves out.
How is Kentucky state withholding estimated?
The 2026 optional formula applies 3.5% after a $3,360 annual deduction, then divides by payments. Valid K-4 elections may change withholding. Local occupational taxes are separate and excluded unless you enter an actual deduction.
How much is a $52,000 Kentucky salary per biweekly paycheck?
Before taxes and deductions, $52,000 divided over 26 biweekly checks is $2,000 per check. The worked example uses the shared calculation engine to show the federal taxes and estimated net amount.
Why does my employer's paycheck differ?
Your W-4, taxable benefit elections, garnishments, year-to-date wages, irregular payments and payroll rounding can change actual withholding. This is an annualized estimate, not a tax return or a payroll compliance determination.
Does this cover another state's tax if I commute across a border?
No. Kentucky selection does not decide another state's residency, work-location or withholding obligations. Review the applicable state rules for cross-border work.
