Montana Form Montana MW-4

Copy your actual MW-4 independently of federal calculator entries. Line 2 is a confirmed election, not an eligibility decision. Line 4 replaces lines 1–3; clear other entries. Nearest whole-dollar base follows the nine worked examples; the guide's general rounded-up wording differs. Quarterly/semiannual, exemptions, local/interstate and separately paid supplements are outside this ordinary estimate. Only already-confirmed qualifying wage exclusions. Bonus, entered overtime and taxable tips are averaged; no actual-check compliance or lawful-overtime decision. Employer UI/WC are not employee deductions. View Form Montana MW-4

Copy whole dollars, including any completed jobs worksheet, once. Leave zero for line 4. Technical estimate limit $10,000, not a legal maximum.
Use only the existing valid line 2 election for similar incomes. No automatic federal Step 2 transfer or eligibility decision.
Blocks this estimate's final report. Tribal, military, reciprocal and other exemption eligibility require separate assessment.

How Montana withholding is calculated

Actual MW-4, independent elections

Copy line 1a, 1b or 1c and any actual valid line 2 election. Line 2 uses the Single schedule for an existing qualifying Joint election; this tool does not decide similar-income eligibility. Line 3 includes your already completed jobs worksheet once. Line 4 replaces lines 1–3, including an actual zero. Do not alter your certificate to fit the tool.

Whole-dollar worked-example method

The estimate rounds the state base to the nearest whole dollar, following all nine specific examples. The guide’s general rounded-up wording differs; this method choice is explicit, not an agency clarification. Each supported period retains its printed constants. We do not manufacture quarterly or semiannual tables by scaling an annual table.

Fictional ordinary-pay example

A $52,000 annual salary paid 26 times gives $2,000 per period. Actual MW-4 line 1a: ($2,000 − $619) × 4.7% = $64.907, rounded to $65 state withholding. Actual Joint without line 2 gives $36; Joint with actual line 2 gives $65. An actual $7 line 3 raises $65 to $72 once. These are withholding examples, not final-return liability.

Employee costs and wage-law scope

Montana law prohibits shifting employer UI contributions or workers compensation premiums to employee wages. They are not deducted here. The general 2026 minimum is $10.85, with coverage exceptions; tips do not create a general state tip credit. Entered overtime hours and multiplier do not establish regular rate, exemptions or lawful entitlement. Taxable benefits and special plans require confirmed facts.

Estimate scope

2026 ordinary MW-4 estimate: actual own-period tables; nearest whole-dollar base follows all nine worked examples, while the guide's general rounded-up wording differs. Copy status and line 2 independently; line 3 once, or explicit line 4 instead of lines 1–3. Quarterly/semiannual and exemption claims are unsupported. Bonus, entered overtime and taxable tips are averaged, not separate-check withholding. Only already-confirmed qualifying benefit exclusions; no eligibility decision. Employer UI/WC are not employee charges. No local/interstate allocation, actual YTD, special plans, withholding-sufficiency or complete wage-law determination.

Montana paycheck questions

What the Montana estimate includes, which official schedules it uses, and what it deliberately leaves out.

Does federal filing status complete my Montana certificate?

No. Copy your actual completed MW-4. This tool does not prepare or approve elections, exemption claims or multiple-job eligibility.

Can I use quarterly or semiannual payroll?

Those periods are outside this ordinary estimate and block the final report. Only actual published supported-period formulas are used.

Does line 4 add to ordinary withholding?

No. It replaces lines 1–3. An actual zero is meaningful; conflicting line 2 or line 3 entries block the report.
